CHARACTER INTERVIEW WITH JARA
by: Megan Charlie
Interviewer: So a little birdie told me that you can’t lie up here in the human kingdoms. Should make this interview fun, eh?
Jara: [tight smile]
Interviewer: Right. Is it also true that iron burns you?
Jara: Are there going to be any relevant questions for me to answer?
Interviewer: [cough] Right, of course. So Jar-ah–
Jara: It’s pronounced “Ya-rah”.
Interviewer: Beg pardon. Jara Moen of the Earth Court, tell us about yourself.
Jara: I’m afraid you will need to be more specific. Are you asking for my age? Weight? Magical affinity? I assume you can perceive my coloring and overall shape for yourself.
Interviewer: Yes! What can you do with your magic?
Jara: I always know where I am.
Interviewer: That’s handy. What else? I mean, it would be pretty lame to just have one magic trick. [laugh]
Jara: [silence]
Interviewer: So, I hear the fae are long lived. You look about 26. Are you really over 200 years old?
Jara: I am 40.
Interviewer: Have I offended you? [pause] That’s not a no.
Jara: Is that a list of questions in your hand merely there to keep your fingers busy?
Interviewer: Ahem. Could you tell us about this contest that’s traveling through our fair kingdoms?
Jara: The Contest is an invention of the current governor of the Winter Court in the Vergeet Region.
Interviewer: [blink] And…
Jara: Contestants are put through a series of trials, or tasks, as the group traverses the human kingdoms.
Interviewer: How is the winner determined?
Jara: Last one standing, usually.
Interviewer: Sounds … intense. Can you describe some of the tasks for us?
Jara: They are different every Contest.
Interviewer: Um, yes. Will you tell us about some of the ones that have already happened?
Jara: While in the mountains, contestants were expected to stand outside in blizzard-like conditions for as long as possible.
Interviewer: I bet the Fire Court fae did well.
Jara: The Winter Court did better.
Interviewer: Of course. What else?
Jara: Did you want me to describe finding and collecting iron in the wild, being forced to steal from a high ranking Unseelie, or the mindless drudgery of trekking back and forth through a portal until someone collapses?
Interviewer: That’s probably … fine. Uh, let me just check this list for a moment. Ah. What makes this Contest different from other competitions?
Jara: For one, everyone is expected to provide their own supplies and keep up. Stragglers get left behind.
Interviewer: What if-
Jara: No matter what.
Interviewer: Oh. [paper rustling] Who would compete under those conditions?
Jara: Desperate people.
Interviewer: Makes sense. What’s the prize then?
Jara: A year’s worth of both food and wages for your community.
Interviewer: [whistle] That’s some prize.
Jara: Enough to get out of Vergeet, if you play your cards right.
Interviewer: Isn’t that in–what’s it called, the Under Realm? Yes. Um, wouldn’t living underground be great for an Earth Court fae?
Jara: The Vergeet Region is almost completely comprised of Unseelie fae.
Interviewer: And you are…
Jara: Seelie.
Interviewer: Ah. No love lost there, I guess.
Jara: Are we done yet?
Interviewer: Wait, I never asked. Are you competing?
Jara: The contestants are traditionally male.
Interviewer: Which you are not…
Jara: Contestants are allowed one support person, who may be male or female.
Interviewer: Ohhh, are you supporting someone? Is there someone “special” you’re helping win the Contest?
Jara: We’re done here.
Interviewer: No, wait! Come back, please! We want to hear about your love life. Annnnd, she’s gone.
Well that was a doozy. I think Jara is going to make things interesting helping their contestant entry win a grand prize with some love influence on the side. MEGAN CHARLIE'S FEATURED STORY:
Fortune's Fool
A Redacted Series Companion Story
Part of a tiny displaced Seelie community surrounded by Unseelie courts, Jara knows their situation needs to change. Taking advantage of a loophole in the rules, she joins the Contest hosted by a governor of the Winter Court.
The Contest may be a humiliating and dangerous set of tasks designed solely for the governor's amusement, but the winnings would be more than enough to relocate her sick mother and the handful of their Seelie neighbors.
Unfortunately, Jara may have overestimated her ability to survive while completing the tasks. And she definitely underestimated her fellow contestants.
Her inherent Earth magic was supposed to be a boon, but the Contest traverses most of the known world and knowing exactly where she is at all times does little to lessen the distances. Or peril.
Fueled by desperation, Jara has no option but to press on. Will her determination be enough to keep her alive AND save her family?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Megan Charlie
Megan Charlie is a fantasy author currently exploring the characters who were left out of the original fairy tales. When she isn't questioning a villain's origin story or wondering what would have happened if Prince Charming had a younger brother, Megan enjoys reading, crafting, and chai lattes.
Megan lives with her very understanding husband and three increasingly tall children in Oregon. Two cat-shaped creatures also share the house (when they aren't stirring up trouble in other dimensions).
