Thank you for joining us today here on The Dungeon Crawler’s Blog. We like to let every author start things off by introducing themselves.
My name is Diana Dawn. I am a wife and mother of three. I work in in the technology field, writing computer programs and programming websites. I love taking vacations with my family. I also do community theater, acting and singing in musical productions.
Every author has a unique story to their journey in the writing industry. Can you tell us why you started writing and how you became an author for the first time?
I started creating stories in grade school. I loved to watch a show or movie and then put my own spin on it and even act it out. Then I started creating my own original stories. Years ago, I was part of an online writing group where we wrote in a “shared world”. I wrote with them for about ten years before the group finally shut down. I didn’t do anything with my writing for about another ten years. Then I decided to not let all that hard work and imagination go to waste. So in 2019, I decided to self-publish those chapters into a book series. I have eleven books out in the series right now and am planning to wrap up the series and finish book twelve very soon. I also have many other stand-alone stories published.
Right now, you have a special project inside the pages of one of our box sets. That box set is titled, “Beyond Starlight”. Can you tell us a little bit about your story?
I have mostly written fantasy or historical and contemporary romance. So for this set, I decided to branch into a science-fiction romance story. To be honest, I took a lot of inspiration from a couple of my favorite characters in the Star Trek universe… ‘Pavel Chekov’ and ‘Data’. LOL!
Your story in our box set, “Beyond Starlight” must have a unique main character or duo in your story. Can you tell us about her/he or them?
My main character is Kira. She is part of an alien race called the Gundrie. Mostly they look like humans, with a few differences (like blue-colored blood). Her planet’s sun collapsed, and her world was destroyed. She thought the rest of her race had also perished, but then she discovers that one survived… and she despises him! LOL! Before the death of her planet, her father had given her a necklace with a crystal pendant that was infused with the energy of their planet’s sun. She later discovers that the power of this crystal would not only allow her to live forever, but also giver her special powers.
What is the main theme of your story in the box set, “Beyond Starlight?”
Well, after discovering that other than a man she despises, she is the only member left in her race. If you are one of the last of a race that lives forever, how can you find everlasting love?
Do you have a certain technique to your writing style? What is your writing style like?
I write clean romance in mostly third person omniscient style. I have mainly focused my writing around YA/NA characters, but my stories can be enjoyed by all audiences. I focus on happy endings with a sweet romance.
If you could give another author advice what would the top three things you would share with them to help them in their journey as an author?
1. Write what you know. I know this is said a lot, but it’s true! I struggle more trying to write out of my comfort zone. But when I focus on something I know, the words and content just flow much easier, and will also seem more real to the reader
2. Picture the scenes in your head. Get a visual of the scene. Even visualize the character’s faces and emotions. I will listen to music and play the scene out like a music video in my head sometimes! LOL!
3. If you think of an idea for your current story, don’t wait to write it down! I might even be thinking of it while driving, so I’ll just hit the voice recorder on my phone and dictate notes that I can play back later and jot down. Trust me, you don’t want to be like, “now what was that idea I had yesterday?” And remember to stay organized... not just in your story writing but especially in your deliverables. Don't let a deadline creep up on you and catch you unawares. Put things on your calendar. Make notes to yourself... even send emails to yourself. This helps me to remember things, too!
Share three things about your personal life you don’t mind our readers knowing about?
1. As I mentioned, I do musical theater, and I recently landed a leading role that has been a dream role for me! It’s challenging to juggle writing and being in a show, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
2. My husband and I will be celebrating our 20th anniversary this October and we are planning a cruise and a trip to Disney to celebrate!
3. I’m currently a sponsor in a book expo this coming fall, and I am very excited about it! I am even rushing to put out a couple of collections of some of my shorter stories just in time for the event. Did I mention I’ve been very busy? LOL!
As all good things come to an end what would you like to leave our audience with for future thoughts about your writing, your author career, or you as a person? Please share.
We all know that the same goes for anything in life, the journey of an author can also be a challenge. Whether it's fighting writer's block, struggling with marketing your books or your brand, or just life getting in the way of your schedule... the key is to push through to your next milestone. Always have a goal in mind. And most importantly, stay positive! You can do anything you set your mind to!
